The
beetle eats the Cathedral
David Brown
No love had ever shone
Quite so bright
Hell, you could see it from
Satellite
A nut and bolt could never be that tight
The big house and children
Two point four
All the boxes filled in
Tick some more
Two cars and holidays abroad
Middle aged and restless
Forty-five
He fooled around with a waitress
On the side
Roast potatoes with a side of fries
It don't seem feasible
but little by little
The beetle eats the Cathedral
Birds can't hear each other
When they sing
So they can't find a lover
On the wing
All we hear are cars and mobiles ring
Can't keep it together
All the time
Too many agendas
Not just mine
So many songs - so little time
But hope survives
Beneath the rubble of our lives
You can dig down and set it free
Like earthquake babies - from the debris
It don't seem feasible
but little by little
The beetle eats the Cathedral
Throw the boots of adventure
In the trash
Now it's soup and dentures
In a glass
Waiting for that holy heap of ash |
